Highest Partnership in T20 World Cup by Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's highest partnership in the T20 World Cup
Sri Lanka has always done well in ICC competitions, winning the 2014 T20 World Cup and finishing second in the 2009 and 2012 T20 World Cups. Cricket lovers were blessed to see some Sri Lankan legends playing the game of cricket. They also came out as one of the strongest teams in the shorter format.
The SL team's overall record in the T20 competition is really good. One of the main reasons for this is the right combination of strong batting and some good spin bowling options. But in this article, we are going to look at some of the best SL batting partnerships in the T20 World Cup.
3. Tillakratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya (124 runs) against West Indies in 2009 ICC
It was the 11th match of the 2009 World Cup between Sri Lanka and West Indies in Nottingham. After winning the toss, the Caribbean team opted to bat first, but the move did not pay off. As both Sri Lankan openers attacked the bowlers, 124 runs for the first wicket Tillakratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya both scored their respective half-centuries.
Dilsan scored 74 off 47 balls while Jayasuriya made 81 off 47 balls as Sri Lanka posted 192/5 in 20 overs. The West Indies had a few shots in their pursuit of the target but failed to convert them into anything of substance. They ended up scoring just 177/5 and lost the match by 15 runs. Jayasuriya won the Man of the Match title.
2. Tillakratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene (145 runs) against England in ICC 2014
Dilshan made 55 off 47 balls and Jayawardene made 89 off 51. However, England lost their first two wickets in the very first chase. But then they also had a great partnership of 152 runs between Alex Hales (116*) and Eoin Morgan (57) to win the match.
1. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara (166 runs) vs West Indies in the 2010 T20 World Cup.
This is not only the highest partnership for Sri Lanka but also for any team in the World Cup. It was the 16th match of the 2010 tournament between Sri Lanka and West Indies. Lions batted first during the match. In their turn, the Lions scored 195/3 in 20 overs. Sanath Jayasuriya got out early but Mahela Jayawardene and captain Kumar Sangakkara added 166 runs to help their team to a big total.
Both the batsmen scored big half-centuries. Jayawardene scored an unbeaten 98 off 56 balls, including nine fours and four maximums, while Sangakkara made 68 off 49. It was a big target for the West Indies and they managed just 138/8 to lose the match by 57 runs.
