India will play just one warm-up match before the T20 World Cup 2024
India will play just one warm-up game ahead of the 20-20 World Cup tie in the USA and West Indies, a departure from its previous preparations for ICC events where it always played two warm-up games.
As it is a single match, speculations will start. But Kirkiz understands that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put a lot of pressure to play this match in Newark so that the performance of the team can be established.
It has been reported that organizers International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) have proposed a warm-up match in Florida. However, Indian players, weary of extensive travel and the highly demanding Indian Premier League (IPL), are reluctant to fly from New York to Florida and back for a single training session.
India's warm-up games have high commercial value and are always televised because of the vast monetization opportunities. In 2015, the India-Australia warm-up match in Adelaide was broadcast in India but not in Australia. The ICC has indicated that the schedule will be published in the coming days. Most of the other teams, apart from Pakistan and England, will play two warm-up matches each.
England and Pakistan are currently playing a bilateral series that ends on May 30, leaving them with insufficient time for warm-up matches. The World Cup will begin on June 1, which suggests that the warm-up matches are likely to take place between May 25-26, about 10-11 days from today.
Initially, the Indian team was scheduled to leave for New York on May 21, immediately after the conclusion of the IPL league phase. However, it has now been revealed that the team will travel in two groups - on May 25 and 26. The players who will take part in the IPL final on May 26 will go out later.
The Indian League matches in New York are scheduled for June 5 (vs. Ireland), June 9 (vs. Pakistan) and June 12 (vs. USA). The league final against Canada will be played in Florida on June 15, after which the team will travel to the West Indies for the Super Eight matches.
