The second-highest run chase came in the first match of the first World Cup in 2007. It was a match between South Africa and West Indies in Johannesburg. Batting first, the Caribbean team posted 205/6 thanks to Chris Gayle's brilliant century. The left-hander scored 117 off just 57 balls.
Chasing the target, the Proteas got off to a really decent start with the openers adding 54 runs. But a third-wicket partnership of 120 from just 57 balls sealed the match in South Africa's favour. Herschel Gibbs scored 90 runs and Justin Kemp scored 46 off 22 balls to record the second-highest run chase in a T20 World Cup.

It was a match that saw a total of 459 runs in 37.4 overs. This match also recorded the second and third-highest total scores in T20 World Cup history. This was the 18th match between England and South Africa at Wankhede. First, South Africa posted 229/4 runs with the help of Hashim Amla (58), De Kock (52) and JP Duminy (54).
In pursuit of the target, the England team also survived some small partnerships. Jason Roy made 43 off just 16 to give his team a shock start. But Joe Root held the innings and kept scoring too. England bowled this mammoth in 19.4 overs and won the match by two wickets. Root won Man of the Match for his knock of 83 for 44.
