'The timing has to be right' - Justin Langer on being India's head coach
Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer asked him the usual questions about becoming the next head coach of the Indian men's team after reports emerged that he might throw his hat in the ring. With Rahul Dravid's tenure ending in June after the T20 World Cup, the BCCI is awaiting fresh applications for the post.
"It would be almost the biggest job in cricket to be the head coach of the Indian cricket team," Langer said after LSG's final game of the season on Friday (May 17). It will be a big challenge. It will be great entertainment and a great opportunity to win ICC titles."
Langer took on another big job - coaching Australia in difficult circumstances as he succeeded Darren Lehmann in the wake of the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. He oversaw a home Test series defeat against India, but his team bounced back in the ODI series in India before reaching the semi-finals of the ODI tournament in 2019 and retaining the Ashes.
As for that time, Langer felt that the 'time' had to be a proper high-pressure job like coaching the Indian team.
"But all these things have to be timed. I spent about four years on the Australian cricket team. It's all-encompassing. It's tiring. Rahul Dravid will probably tell you the same thing and Ravi Shastri will tell you, The same pressure to win for the Indian team is huge,” Langer said.
However, without saying it in so many words, Langer almost put himself out of the position. "I'm sure the next person who gets the job will look forward to the project."
