Why Did My Bird Die so Suddenly
Once Imam Shafi'i (RA) reached Imam Malik (RA). He spent the night there. Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) asked, "Why did you not sleep at night?" He said that a hadith had come before me that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the brother of a young boy.
He said: O Abu Umayr! What did your bird do? This child had raised a bird and he died. Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) met him, he would say to him cheerfully, "What did your bird do to you?" That is, when he died and left you, I kept meditating on these words, and from so many fragments of the Holy Hadith, I have found the answers to forty questions of jurisprudence, such as how to call a small child with contempt.
That is why Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say: O Allah, the day does not look good except with your remembrance and the night does not look good except with you in secret and need.
