T20 World Cup: The next major ICC tournament is the T20I World Cup in Australia starting in October. We have seen seven events and this will be the eighth edition of this multinational tournament. It has hosted many legends and the upcoming event will feature many of today's greats. But in the championship's rich history, there are a few players who have left their mark.
So in this article, we are going to look at the highest run scorers in T20 World Cup history. Every batsman aims to do well in an ICC event. And also playing a T20 match in the World Cup brings more pressure but few can overcome it. And those who do are counted among the best.
3. Playing for Sri Lanka, batsman Tane Dilshan scored (897 runs) in 35 matches.
The former Sri Lankan all-rounder is the third most successful batsman in T20 World Cup history when it comes to most runs. Dilshan was an integral part of the Sri Lankan team in 2009, 2012 when Sri Lanka reached the final and in 2014 when they won their youth title. He is also the best player.
Dilshan played 35 matches and scored 897 runs at an average of 30.93 and a strike rate of 124.06. He also scored six half-centuries in ICC competitions and hit a total of 101 fours and 20 sixes. Now he is retired but he is definitely one of the best Sri Lanka lovers.
2. Grace Gayle scored (965 runs) in 33 matches while playing for West Indies.
Chris Gayle is a force to reckon with when it comes to T20 cricket. There are not many who can match the power of this great West Indian. The left-hander holds many records in the shortest format of the game and is available on almost every roster in the batting department. He has played in all seven tournaments for his team and has the second highest runs in the T20 World Cup.
Gayle scored 965 runs in 33 matches at an average of 34.46 and a strike rate of 142.75. The left-hander is also the only player to have two hundreds and most sixes in T20 World Cup history. Gayle scored two centuries and seven half-centuries and hit 63 sixes. He was an integral part of the West Indies team in the 2012 and 2016 World Cup victories.
1. Mahela Jayawardene (1016 runs) for Sri Lanka in 31 matches
Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene tops the list and is the only one with more than 1,000 runs. Jayawardene played just five seasons between 2007 and 2014, but he is the leader of the competition. There is no doubt that he is one of the best batsmen to ever grace the cricket field and he has had an impact in the T20 World Cup as well.
In 31 matches, Jayawardene scored 1016 runs at an average of 39.07 and a strike rate of 134.74. He also hit one century and six half-centuries in the tournament. He also leads the batsmen's race with most fours. The former Sri Lankan captain hit 111 fours and 25 maximums in the competition.
