Highest second-wicket partnership in ICC T20 World Cup

World Cup T20: Good partnerships play a key role in the shortest cricket matches. And there are many occasions when one of the two openers gets out early and the 3rd batsman has to join the crease. Sometimes it happens in the first innings. And sometimes it happens on the power play. But the second wicket partnership is as important as the opening partnership.

If the openings have given a good start, it helps to keep the momentum going. On the other hand, it also helps to stop conceding more goals and helps the team to set a good goal. And it becomes even more important in the high-pressure matches of the T20 World Cup. However, if we look at the history of World Cup events, there are not many instances where more than 100 runs have been added to the second wicket. Only six times has the second-wicket partnership crossed the 100-run mark. Therefore, in this article, we will discuss the top ten second-wicket partnerships in the T20 World Cup.

1. Quinton de Kock and Riley Rossouw (163) against Bangladesh in the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Quinton De Kock and Riley Rossouw combined for 163 runs, which is now the highest T20 World Cup second-wicket partnership (overall). They did it first against Bangladesh in the 2022 World Cup in Sindh. Riley Rossouw went on to score the first century of the 2022 T20 World Cup in that inning.

2. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara (166) against West Indies in the 2010 T20 World Cup.

The second-highest second-wicket partnership of all time was added in the third edition of this ICC event. It was the 16th match of the tournament when Sri Lanka took on the West Indies at Bridgetown. Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and was elected first. Sri Lanka lost Sanath Jayasuriya's wicket early as he got out after just six runs. With skipper Mahila Jayawardene starting to join the crease after that. Both the stylish batsmen then started playing their shots to all parts of the ground and continued to press.

Both also brought up their half-centuries in the process. They posted the highest partnership of 166 runs for the second wicket, which still stands as a record in the ICC competition. Sangakkara retired after 68 runs and Jayawardene continued and remained unbeaten on 98 runs. The Lankan Lions set the West Indies a target of 195 which they failed to achieve and lost the match by 57 runs.

3. T Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene (145) against England in T20 World Cup 2014.

There are also two Sri Lankan puzzles in the second instance. But this time it was Tillakaratne Dilshan with Mahela Jayawardene against England in the 2014 World Cup at Chattogram. England captain Stuart Broad won the toss and elected to bowl first. Sri Lanka lost their opener Kusal Perera early and that brought Jayawardene to the crease. Then he and Dilshan take over the attack on the English bowlers. Surprisingly, Jayawardene took an aggressive approach and both batsmen completed their half-centuries.

However, after adding 145 runs for the second wicket, Jayawardene got out and the partnership ended. He scored 89 while Dilsan scored 55 in that innings to help their team reach 189. However, they lost the match thanks to English opener Alex Hales (116*). But that partnership was still the second highest of all time.

4. Mitchell Marsh and David Warner (124) vs West Indies in the 2021 T20I World Cup.

The third and latest took place at the last ICC event in the UAE. It was the 38th match of the tournament between West Indies and Australia. Batting first, West Indies set the men in yellow a target of 158 runs to win. Australia chased the target and lost the wicket of captain Aaron Finch early. But then Mitchell Marsha and David Warner played aggressive innings. Both the batsmen looked in full swing to finish early.

And finally, they did. Australia reached the target of 161 in just 16.2 overs thanks to a 124 partnership between Warner and Marsh. They also scored a half-century each. Marsh was unlucky to get out after 53 runs. But Warner was unbeaten on 89 and was also named the man of the match.
