Highest 3rd wicket partnership in T20 World Cup

The eighth leg of the T20 World Cup is just 5 months away. It will take place in Australia from September to October. All teams are preparing for it. But records show that a team with a strong batting middle order always has a better chance of winning. Like the Australian team that won last season, they also had Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith in the middle. Or if we look at the Indian team that won the first season, Yuvraj Singh was the no. There were 4 who batted like a dream. It shows the strength of the team.

Drummers No. 3 and 4 form an important combination in the batting order which means third-wicket partnerships are always very important for a team. Because it can maximize the good start given by the openings and also stop the goal march. And in any high-pressure match in the T20 World Cup, the importance of the third-wicket partnership is greater. Hence, in this article, we will discuss the top ten third-wicket partnerships in the T20 World Cup.

1. Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan (152) vs Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup.

It was the 22nd match of the 2014 World Cup between Sri Lanka and England in Chattogram. Stuart Broad, the England captain, won the toss and elected to bowl first. However, this match is also remembered for the second-highest partnership (145) for the second wicket between Dilshan and Jayawardene. Sri Lanka set England a target of 190 runs. However, England got off to a poor start and lost their first two wickets without scoring a single run. Michael Lumb and Meena Ali both went scoreless.

Then Eoin Morgan joined Alex Hales at the crease. At that point, it looked like Sri Lanka might win this match. But then came a record partnership between Hales and Morgan that sealed the deal for England. The two batsmen added 152 runs in the third wicket. Hales (116*) scored an unbeaten hundred and Morgan was out after 57 runs.

2. Herschel Gibbs and Justin Kemp (120*) v West Indies in the 2007 T20 World Cup.

This was the first Group A match of the first season of the T20I World Cup in South Africa. West Indies closed the Johannesburg Capes with hosts South Africa. Graeme Smith won the toss and elected to field first. However, like the first one, this match too saw another big partnership, but this time for the first wicket. For the West Indies, Chris Gayle scored 117 and Devon Smith added 145 for the first wicket, the second-highest first-wicket partnership in World Cup history.

West Indies set the Proteas a mammoth target of 206. South Africa lost two wickets for 88 and looked in dire straits. But an unbeaten partnership between Herschel Gibbs and Justin Kemp (120*) saw South Africa home with 14 balls to spare. It remains the second-highest third-wicket partnership of all time.

3. Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell (118) vs Pakistan in the 2014 T20I World Cup.

It was the 16th match of the 2014 World Cup between Pakistan and Australia. After winning the toss, the men in yellow decided not to bat but to bowl. Pakistan batted first and bowled well, ending the innings at 191/5 in 20 overs. Umar Akmal top scored with 94 off 54.

Chasing the target, Australia lost two wickets but a third-wicket partnership between Aaron Finch (65) and Glenn Maxwell (75) brought the team back into the chase. Both added 118 runs for the third wicket but both were retired in the end. Australia fell short by 16 runs and lost the match.
