Fastest Century in T20 World Cup
Fastest century in T20 World Cup
T20 cricket is one of the most followed fans. Cricket lovers love to watch batsmen hit big sixes and boundaries. Because the batsman gets a license to waste and drive after the bowlers. With only 120 balls left in an innings, they need to add more and more runs. But sometimes we saw an extraordinary performance from the batsmen.
There are nine such instances where a batsman has scored a century in a T20 World Cup tournament. Scoring a century almost always puts a team in a winning position, but reaching the 100-run mark in the shorter format is very difficult. So in this article, we will discuss the fastest century by a batsman in the T20 World Cup.
3. Brendon McCullum (100 off 51 balls) against Bangladesh in the 2012 World Cup.
Third on this list is former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum. Known for his big hits and quick runs, McCullum scored this century against Bangladesh in the 2016 World Cup. The Kiwis batted first and took their turn, scoring 191/3 in 20 overs. McCullum scored a 51-ball hundred to help his team to a huge total.
He finished the innings with 124 runs from 58 balls, including 11 boundaries and seven maximums, at a strike rate of 212.06. This is the highest score so far by a T20 World Cup player.
2. Chris Gayle (100 from 50 balls) against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup
The second fastest century in an ICC event also belongs to the 'Universe Boss'. The left-hander is the only player in the world to have scored two centuries in the T20 World Cup. The century came in the very first edition, against South Africa. It was the first century by a player in an ICC event.
First, the West Indies posted a mammoth total of 205/6 in their 20 overs. Chris Gayle scored a fantastic century in this match of just 50 balls. He scored 117 runs from just 57 balls, including seven boundaries and ten maximums. However, West Indies lost the match thanks to Herschelle Gibbs's brilliant knock of 90*. But Gayle was named "best man".
1. Chris Gayle (100 not out from 47 balls) against England in 2016
Chris Gayle is surely the wildest batsman the game of cricket has ever seen. There is hardly a record that is not to be found in the name of Gale. He is also first on this list. The fastest century in a T20 World Cup came from the bat of the 'Universe Boss'.
It was a game against England. Batting first, England made 182/6 in their 20 overs. Chasing the target, West Indies lost opener Johnson Charles in the very first over. But then Gayle single-handedly stormed the game away from England. The southpaw smashed a 47-ball hundred to win the match for his side. He remained unbeaten with a 100* off 48 balls, including five fours and 11 maximums.
